Who is Kokopelli, anyway?

Kokopelli is an iconic figure that is typically seen as a fertility deity, who emerged as a figure in the religious culture of the Southwest, from 500 AD to 1325 AD.  Even today, Kokopelli is worshipped by many Native American tribes in the region.

The most common representation of Kokopelli is that of a humpbacked flute player, often depicted as having large “antennas” on his head.  It is believed that Kokopelli’s deformities are the result of Pot’s disease, a type of tuberculosis.
